s Fertile Question:
How does advertising, including print, visual media and sound, affect and alter our opinions and perceptions as a consumer?
Tasks
0.Brainstorm using a graphic organiser as many questions and key words you can think of that could relate to our fertile question. 1. What three questions are your group going to be investigating.
-1) Do we judge a product by it's packaging and why?
-2) Why do some supermarkets have different prices even though they are owned by the same company?
-3) Which way of advertising is most effective?
2. Look at your questions, what do you think you will learn in your inquiry
I think I'll learn why people normally judge a product by its packaging and why they judge it by its packaging. The reason why supermarkets owned by the same company have different prices and the best way of advertising.
~Dianna Gui
I think that I will learn some effective advertising techniques and how advertising affects us. I think that I will also learn the reason why some supermarkets have different prices even though they are owned by the same company!
~Michelle Li 3. Have your group conference with the teacher
Tick :) 4. Investigate questions - Find out as much information about your questions as you can. Record all information and answers on your wiki page.
Q1) Do we judge a product by it's packaging and why?
Yes, we do judge a product by it's packaging. Originally we packaged food to protect the food itself because light exposure destroyed the nutrients or flavour. Now, packaging plays an important role in choosing what to buy. For example; would you buy biscuits in plain white packaging, or would you buy a biscuit with cleverly made packaging? Colours play an important role; they have different meanings and will trigger different emotions within people. For example; Green symbolises life, nature, environment, youth, money, renewal, hope, and power. It is a color that soothes people, reduces pain, and makes us feel safe. This is why many jails, schools, waiting rooms, and hospitals' walls are light green.
Quote:"It's generally accepted that 70 - 80% of a consumer's purchasing decision is made at the point of sale. In supermarkets, for example, research shows shoppers spend an average of less than 10 seconds in any single product category, so decisions are made quickly and often based on what a product looks like," says Hamida Al Balushi (advertising expert). Studies done in March last year has shown that we judge by mostly looking and feeling. The Indian researcher who conducted the experiment said that some people would judge a beverage by the firmness of the cup. Some people (in the test) reported negative comments for the taste of mineral water in the flimsy cup and positive comments for the mineral water in the more firm cup. The mineral water in the cups were both the same.
Q2) Why do some supermarkets have different prices even though they are owned by the same company?
Supermarkets such as Countdown, Woolworth and Foodtown have different prices because they are all owned by the same company but there are managers which look after each separate store. For example; A Dairy Milk Chocolate King Size may cost four dollars at Foodtown but may cost four dollars fifty at Woolworths. However now 'Progressive' (the company that owns the three supermarkets) are deciding to merge all three shops into Countdown so this may not occur anymore.
The most effective way of advertising is visual media. Visual media includes TV ads, computer pop-ups and websites such as Youtube, Bebo and Facebook. Visual advertising is the best way to advertise because visual advertisements have a catchy headline to draw the people in. People get drawn by different colours (please refer to question 1). After a catchy headline, great graphic design photos in ads are also very eye catching. Research shows that people remember images better than words/writings. Many people buy products because they remember the advertisement and decide to give the product a try.
5. Think deeper - Look back at our major question, how are you now going to use the information you have to answer this question?
The information we'll get for our three question will relate quite a lot to our major question because our questions are about the way companies advertise products and we'll be able to answer using the research as how it affects our opinions.
~Dianna
I think that if we understand how they advertise we can then figure out which techniques are the most effective and affect us most.
~Michelle Li 6. So What ! - How can you change things as part of your learning. You need to come up with a practical task to show what you have learned and how you could change things because of your new knowledge.
We are going to...
-Conduct a test to prove that people do judge by packaging.
We will buy one packet of biscuits in lovely, eye-catching packaging and one packet of plain, cheap budget biscuits.
The biscuits will be the same kind (eg. two different brands of chocolate-chip cookies). They will be the same size/colour (reasonably).
We will swap the biscuits' packaging with each other.
We will go around the streets/school asking people to taste one biscuit and tell us which one would they buy based on taste and packaging.
We will present this in a poster or a results table.
7. Before you put this into action conference with your teacher.
Tick :) 8. Record on your wiki page the steps you will take to make your "SO WHAT" a success. 9.Self assessment - Using the Key Competencies I want you to evaluate your group, giving evidence, how you successfully or unsuccessfully completed your assignment. If some of your assessment was unsuccessful what could you do better next time.
You will need to assess your group under each heading Managing self - How did each member contribute and manage the jobs they had throughout your inquiry
Both of us contributed well and manage to finish quite quickly
~Dianna Gui
Both of us didn't really have jobs; instead we both did each job together.
~Michelle Li Relating to others - Did your group listen to each other, respond to points of view, value opinions, recognise alternative responses.
We listened to each other's opinions and each other's points of view.
~Dianna Gui
We each had our own time to share ideas and we both listened attentively. We both came up with very good ideas!
~Michelle Li Thinking - How well did you pose questions, collect and analyse info, consider values and responses made by other people, evaluate your findings.
I think we did well in researching and analyzing the information.
~Dianna Gui
We tried our best to analyze the information given and answer our questions in as much detail as possible.
~Michelle Li Participating and Contributing - Did you work and learn co-operatively in school or in the community. Did you share the jobs and responsibilities.
We shared the jobs and responsibilities well.
~Dianna
We shared the computer time fairly (unless one of us didn't know how to do something) and we both managed to do the same amount of work.
~Michelle Li Using language symbols and text - Use and make meaning of the wide range of literacy including texts like newspapers, graphs, statistics, maps, visual and oral media etc.
Yes, we did use a range of literacy, but not as much as we could.
~Dianna
We read a lot of articles and rephrased as much of it as we could. We didn't use many maps because our topic questions do not require maps.
~Michelle Li 10. Teacher assessment - set aside an area for a teacher assessment.
